Hi Guys, looking for tips on getting the new chainon. my first chain replacement.

My main issue is, i cant get the 2 ends of the new chain to get close enough to put the master link in.

I have the correct RK chain 110 link 520 pitch

I have the adjusters backed all the way off with the rear wheel as far forward as i can get it.

Im thinking its still too cold here (sub zero) and the chain with all the nasty wax is too stiff ?

maybe soak it in kerosene to clean the wax off and get it more supple ? wait till its warmer in the shop too.

ideas ?

Hi Straycat,

they work very well in bringing the chain together.

I've even known one mate, who had a chain that he just couldn't get it to fit, that removed the swinging arm and then fitted the chain, that he'd already joined and pulled it round via the back wheel.

Hi Reggie, I ordered one of those tools locally, thanks for the tip.

I can almost get it to meet up, as i work the kinks out of the stiff links, its getting closer.

im sure as it warms up that stiff grease and wax will ease up.

the 2 new sprockets are by the book at 14 front and 39 rear, and they are the same as came off it. The chain is also by the book at 110 links. Oddly the old chain that came off the bike was 112 links (?).

ill not be in the shop today anyway, my small heater cant keep up, we hit -20 degrees Celsius again last night and got another 40cm of snow the other day.

We thought winter was over (it usually is by now), how wrong we were.

Hi Straycat,

we thought Spring had arrived in Lancashire but we dropped to -2 deg C last night, so I decided to have a slightly later start to my two wheeled day!

Nothing like your conditions but at least we missed the snow that we had on Friday.

The chain links only need to be a fraction out and they just won't play the game, so the chain tool makes it easy.
