Hi Guys n Gals,

well the parts have arrived today so I'll do a bit of prep work, that's all.

A question though, I was hoping to leave the barrel in place, so I didn't need to faff about with the piston rings but considering the colour of the coolant I was wondering if you guys would remove it clean it or would you leave it in situ?

My plan was to leave it where it is, give the head a good cleaning, then to fill the cooling system with water and run the bike for a few minutes, before dropping the fluids and changing it for proper coolant.

I've already rinsed out the radiator and bought new hoses ready to replace them and I'll be dropping the expansion tank etc, to clean it later.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Photo's will follow later, as I've just stopped for a brew!

Hi AR-jack,

cheers matey.

What's the best way to keep the piston rings in tight, when replacing the barrel?

i lower the barrel back back on the piston then compress the top ring with my finger and gentaly lower the barrel over it then do the second ring

with the crank at half way so you can turn it over to help

also make sure the piston and barrel has oil on it

its fairly easy just make sure the rings are lined up and the piston is the right way around

Hi Guys n Gals,

well it was time to remove the barrel to find this, with half of the original gasket left on the base.

And the rest found on the barrel.

Here's a view of the lining.

After much cleaning, the barrel came out like this and ready to accept a replacement gasket.

And I cleaned the top up a bit as well.

The piston didn't look too bad on one side.

But the other side looked like this!

And here's the engine area came up like this.

So what do our esteemed members reckon as me, being a four stroker, I reckon it's time for a new piston and the re-honing of the barrel. Any comments will be much appreciated, as would be a recommendation for a shop to do the re-honing (I'd prefer somewhere in Lancashire, with me being a Bolton lad an always like to support local businesses).

looks like you got worn rings as for the piston with it been dirty looks petty worn and barrel looks glazed

could probs get away with a quick hone and new rings if the piston has nice fit and overhaul conditon is good
but that depends on how well the bore is

if marked a rebore new piston and ring is more or less a must

dont use k.h.c piston ring the wont last a tank of petrol the pistons are ok (nothing special)

and 150 mile run in not going above 6/7k rpm unless for a second
also how was the compression , starting ect..?

Good that you took the Cylinder off Reggie, Id be putting a new piston and rings into it, give it a hone and see how the bore looks.

being this far, might as well put new in to it, i'd say.

nice job cleaning up the head.
