Well folks,

Here is my SDR 200.
I have had it about five years and came from Japan via the UK to Ireland.

It's a sweet little bike

Skinny!

I had to replace the fuel tap and also the tank filter/outlet which were bloody expensive. I see on another thread they seem to be common parts to replace.

I also replaced the air filter with a new genuine one, which is alot more intricate than the bit of foam that was in it.

I used POR 15 on the tank then too and it is still spot on.

Just need new fork seals and a bit of tax and it is ready for the road.
Have a new battery on the way for it too .

Have enjoyed looking at all the other SDR's on here and got some very useful tips too.

More updates once I have clocked up another few KMs.

It looks great, well done.

Must say you're a brave man leaving your helmet on the seat like that. There are few sounds a depressing as the noise an Arai makes when it hits concrete, or block paving in your case!

If you'd like an Alpha Racing exhaust and silencer for it I might just know where I can find one...?

You probably wouldn't have to look too far Laughing

Thanks, but I will keep this one standard, I do need to do something with the exhaust heat shield though - it's letting the bike down - very scruffy.

On another note, my wife has taken a shine to the SDR - I will have to discourage her somehow Laughing

Thanks, my two "helpers" - they don't like it when it's running though.

I think they are rare enough everywhere. An import from Japan may be a (pricy) option?

I got the front end out today to do the fork seals

I used a very expensive stand and also a back up device under the exhaust. Not exactly belt and braces but close enough Laughing

Some bits that go bong

The red tape was to try and prevent the caps from being marked by the socket.

The damper rods have a 19mm 12 point recess.
So after rooting around the tool box I ended up with this set up.
I didn't have a 19 hex socket, but the end of the sparkplug socket has a 19mm hex. the 17 hex socket was ok to drive the 18 spark plug socket.
It worked a treat anyway.

There were some pits on the stanchons, which were dressed back and some were filled with epoxy and flattened.
New stanchons are about the same price as a rechrome job, so it will be new ones when required if funds allow.

So that's it, not much damping on these forks at all,
Has anyone tried 15wt oil?
I may increase the preload after I get more KM's up.

My new insurance with the SDR covered started today, so it was time to take it for a proper spin.

I had a new battery charged up and the bike ready to go 4 days ago - I left it alone until the insurance came into effect.

But today the battery was dead as a dodo. not a great start to life for the little fella.

Charged it up and there was a 0.1amp draw on it with the bike turned off.
I checked the wiring diagram that JamesP kindly posted and there are only two live connections with the ignition off. The ignition switch and the regulator/rectifier.

I unpluged the regulator/rectifier and the 0.1 amp draw stopped.

Luckily I had a spare TDR250 one which I swapped in and all is good now.

Battery charges with engine running and no current drain Very Happy

I reckon the old battery with a dead cell lead to its demise.

Took it for a spin anyway, Lovely little bike - it can really take a corner, with weight through the pegs giving a noticeable effect - all inputs giving a noticeable effect.

You really have to ride the bike to get the best from it .

The fork damping that seemed very light off the bike didn't give any concern on the road - I suppose the bike is so light.

Front brake is a little weak but that is down to contaminated pads from the blown fork seal years ago -
I have cleaned and soaked the pads but they still suck. Will have to invest in a new set soon.

Those large fully floating discs look very tempting too - new pads are more where my budget is at though Laughing

One step forward, two steps back Confused

I was looking up the different brands of front brake pads, and was reminded that the front caliper is a similar configuration to the rear calipers on alot of Yamahas.

So I had a look about and found a rear caliper with good pads (on my wife's Zeal) Cleaned them up and they are working a treat - much improved.

The new battery was flat again - same deal Current drain through the regulator/rectifier. It seemed fine when I fitted it but now it is the same as the original. Stator checks out fine, same resistance on all coils and no shorts to earth. Have a new R/R ordered.

When I was peeking under the tank I managed to strain one of the fuel pipes and it fractured. good job it was on the main feed and the tank was on reserve. I reckon it's a pretty bad design to have rubber pipes feeding under gravity from the tank with the tap downstream. Must be the same guy that did the TDR250 oil tank location Very Happy

I got the new reg rectifier from china.

Looks good and only cost 10 or 12 Euro incl post.

It works a treat so far - charging well even with lights on - so happy days.

Hope this on lasts longer than the last one.

Front pads are bedding in now and are giving nice strong preformance.

All good now, Just riding it when I can. Very Happy
