I was also planning to install a tacho as outlined in JamesP SDR rebuild but discovered the drive parts were now NLA. That went out of the window until I spotted an SDR parts bundle on eBay and snagged them for a Greek breaker . The bundle included the NLA parts and I have now ordered the other items from a UK Yamaha dealer plus finding an instrument panel in the UK of an SRX400 which has the OEM tacho to migrate across.

What a bit of luck finding all those bits together! Although it seems likely that the SRX400 tachometer will indicate correctly, I see that its scale only reaches to 9000rpm. Hopefully the tacho will have 1000-1500rpm of 'over-rev' capability without sustaining any damage, so as to enable full use of the SDR engine speed range if desired.
It was also fortunate that the crankshaft webs were salvageable. I was intrigued by your comment about turning down the rotor-side journal on account of rust pitting and using a DT200 oil seal. I had thought that all DT200 models used the same rotor-side oil seal as the SDR - please let us know if there is anything further to tell on this point.
Good work in cleaning up the reed stops - will you apply any coating to prevent future rusting? On occasion when I have found reed stops in a condition like yours, I have taken them for re-zinc-plating.
Will look forward to more images and info in due course!
Regards,
James |

I have called it a day cleaning the chassis and refitted the stem after checking and overhauling the bearings. I'm not looking to produce a garage queen that rarely sees daylight, its planned at being used albeit infrequently.
I've taken the front suspension apart and discovered there is no oil in the forks either - guessing the fluids are removed before shipping? Consequently the internals weren't in good shape but the necessary replacements are still available. (Even the brake hoses were empty).
Am planning to replace/update the engine mountings and currently reviewing what shocks are available as replacements.
It was never planned to be an overnight rebuild but looks like a much longer job than expected. Oh well. |
