I was also planning to install a tacho as outlined in JamesP SDR rebuild but discovered the drive parts were now NLA. That went out of the window until I spotted an SDR parts bundle on eBay and snagged them for a Greek breaker . The bundle included the NLA parts and I have now ordered the other items from a UK Yamaha dealer plus finding an instrument panel in the UK of an SRX400 which has the OEM tacho to migrate across.

What a bit of luck finding all those bits together! Although it seems likely that the SRX400 tachometer will indicate correctly, I see that its scale only reaches to 9000rpm. Hopefully the tacho will have 1000-1500rpm of 'over-rev' capability without sustaining any damage, so as to enable full use of the SDR engine speed range if desired.
It was also fortunate that the crankshaft webs were salvageable. I was intrigued by your comment about turning down the rotor-side journal on account of rust pitting and using a DT200 oil seal. I had thought that all DT200 models used the same rotor-side oil seal as the SDR - please let us know if there is anything further to tell on this point.
Good work in cleaning up the reed stops - will you apply any coating to prevent future rusting? On occasion when I have found reed stops in a condition like yours, I have taken them for re-zinc-plating.
Will look forward to more images and info in due course!
Regards,
James |

I have called it a day cleaning the chassis and refitted the stem after checking and overhauling the bearings. I'm not looking to produce a garage queen that rarely sees daylight, its planned at being used albeit infrequently.
I've taken the front suspension apart and discovered there is no oil in the forks either - guessing the fluids are removed before shipping? Consequently the internals weren't in good shape but the necessary replacements are still available. (Even the brake hoses were empty).
Am planning to replace/update the engine mountings and currently reviewing what shocks are available as replacements.
It was never planned to be an overnight rebuild but looks like a much longer job than expected. Oh well. |

It never rains but it pours.....
The Valter Moto workshop stands have finally arrived together with a lightweight rear stand (the spindle will need addressing to fit the small diameter hollow axle of the SDR). However the Mancave is not accessible now for several weeks whilst some building works is in progress.
Maybe I can prep items in the shed temporarily, things like pressing the new crankcase bearings etc. |

The Valter Moto workshop stands eventually arrived from Italy but the SDR was gazumped when another Stroker got to them first. The stands are used by a dealer I know in their own workshop so came recommended and to be fair are pretty solid.
The SDR is taking a much longer time to resurrect than hoped bt then thats usually the case with most projects. - I reckon another 6 weeks overhaulling the suspension on the other Stroker then the SDR rebuild can hopefully start. |

Ok, the trellis frame is like a mini Forth Bridge, at least it feels like it whilst cleaning it up.
The refurb progress took a hit as I was away for 4 weeks although a bundle of bits was waiting on my return, hopefully the package contains all the items for the DT200R speedo drive mechanism plus the cable.
I have ordered a workshop stand to use whilst both front and rear end remain off the bike which will hopefully be useful as the re-assembly progresses. Yes I could have made my own stand but there is currently a long list of jobs and the stand would have been yet one more.
To be continued ... |
How goes your project? I responded as to you question re what I did with my frame in my thread...
As I mentioned there, I have just been riding mine....
I do keep thinking of modding it, or getting another (I know where one is) and modding it....thoughts include a Beta 300 engine swap (I have a 2024 Street Legal Beta Dirt Bike), or a 3XV V-Twin Yamaha.... _________________ 1971 Kawasaki A7 350 Avenger (stock)

The project got derailed somewhat but hopefully will get kick started again soon. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, the engine was a mess when I bought it so took more time to sort prior to starting the rebuild.
I haven't ridden my SDR at all yet so can't comment on a modded one, however I would recommend a 3XV if you manage to find a good one. Looking at your garage, a 3XV should be the newest of your bikes and the chassis/handling will definitely be a welcome addition I would hope. They are amazing. |
