Yesterday I finally did a few miles/kms on the little af1.

It did put up a bit of a fight though, after letting it warm gently the fuel tap decided to start emptying the tank. Confused

Luckily I had a spare tap from an RS125, so half an hour later I could get moving. Very Happy

New tyre & pads meant taking it easy but it pulled OK, a bit limp on the top end(turns out the power valve cable had loosened off). Embarassed

After a few miles around the country lanes of Worcs I stopped off fow a wazz at my local dealer. Wow, the looks I/my little prilla got off the power rangers you'd think I was towing a litter of kittens behind me, don't think they were impressed! Cool

On my way home it threw it's toys out of the pram. Sad

Stuck behind a granny in a micra & a scooter boy(who had passed me at a pedestrin crossing, on his back wheel!), it cut out on a downhill. I managed to coast into a farm entrance to assess the damage/phone the AA, it turned on the starter, caught then cut out straight away.

I had a spare plug so changed it on the off chance, fired right up. Very Happy

Plug was a bit wet, but not black & oily, more like clean & oily if that make sense?

Ragged it home as fast as it could go then had a quick once over to see if it was anything obvious.

Looks like the routing for the throttle cable was a bit tight which made the oil pump run to fast. Well thats what I'm hoping!

Great update!

Looks a smasher too!
If that appeared parked up at my local biking stops I would be wanting to take it home with me Smile

Has it been tuned? If such a lovely bike, was mine - I would stick it on the RR to ensure its fueling is right. I just couldn't bare the thing running lean with too much oil or jetting..

You are probably better at setting up the Carbs than me though.. With one of my tuned ARs I just couldn't seem to get the jetting right. It took the RR to prove to me it needed a main more than double the size of the origional (95 up to 210!) plus others, needle, pilot.. (vm26)

More pictures when your out please.
It's a beauty

Wink

Today I finally got around to doing something with it, battery charged, fresh fuel purchased. Sod's law? When I went to empty the tank it took an age, when the fuel tap leaked on me it seemed to drain half the tank in seconds. Confused

It lives!

Looks like i was a good boy and drained the float bowl after last use.

Up to temp nicely, ticking over nicely, it even picks up well, little fiddle with the airscrew might be in order.

I had big ideas today, lots of pictures of fitting new piston to my freshly rebuilt bottom end, timing with a DTI etc. Then I looked out of the window, saw the rain & thought phuq that.

Instead I turned my attention to something which has mildy irritated me for a while. Faded LH handlebar switch, silly but bugged me. Rolling Eyes

1 switch from my stash & an ebay purchase from a different model but with intact lettering etc, not correct but I can live with that.

I won't bore you with the fiddly stuff but this is what I finished up with, exciting eh?

What was interesting was the state of the internals, I think 1 may have spent a fair bit of time living outside.

Good on ya' VP.

It is those little things Evil or Very Mad

I'm currently building an RS125 out of two bikes, one a '96 model with Rotax 123 engine & the other (better one mechanically) a, '99 onwards Rotax 122 engine model.

All is going fine despite fitting a 122 engine into a 123 frame Rolling Eyes

I have no intention of doing a full resto because I just want a fun bike that i'm not precious about but........... the bloody quality/finish on the Aprilia's parts is, erm......... Laughing

Cool stuff Howie, engine swap between the two are a qunt, at least cycle parts between the AF1s and early-ish RS125s are generally interchangeable.

I'm shocked at someone taking an interest in my bike, was thinking of making it slower, sh1tter handling and painting it green...

I love these bikes VP,

Don't be shocked fella, I think you'll find that all of us on this forum have a sneaky love for the Aprilia's

I most certainly do. I own a couple

Love

The thing is, Krs & lcs are brilliant bikes, Rgs & Rgvs are wonderful but they are priced way out of the 'working mans' (?!) price range.

Af1' & early Rs' are still affordable, just. Lets make the most of these brilliant machines before the 'collectors' push the price up Evil or Very Mad

Its over 2 years ago since I said I thought its a beauty and my view has not changed.. Much rather have an AF1 than a common RS...

But I may just paint it green...because its the fastest colour..heehee

Love yep that'l do for me.. some of the euro homologation KHI models had the white red green too.

Thought I could see a selfie behind the bike in the window, then wondered what the hell the kid was doing in the RH top corner ... too much Hai Karate?

Laughing I wonder what kids these days would think of Hai karate?

Did a bit today, new piston & it's associated bits. The old one was in quite good condition, but for the cost of a new one it's a bit of a no-brainer.

Old one, few marks on crown, looks like the engine had ingested something at some point!

New un.

Barrel on.

Cylinder head on.

Head cover on.

Hopefully get it timed next weekend, splash some paint on the cases then finish building it up.

Engine done.

Quite enjoyed doing the timing & checking compression ratio (needed some maths for that, been a while).

Need to plug the holes for storage then it's time for some chassis part refurbing.
