I just picked up an SDR after looking for a long time for one. These are very rare here and I have never seen another one around. Only 5300km on the clock and after a carb clean she fired up and ran sweet as.
Does anyone have the parts book for the SDR or is it downloadable somewhere? I will be needing to strip the motor to do the crank seals at least so are parts readily available, I see the head gasket is the same as the DT200R do other parts interchange.

I hope so
Is the engine in the SDR the same as the DT200R, I found somewhere the head gasket is the same but what about the base gasket, clutch cover gasket etc. I know the crank seals are the same as the TZR 125R and have ordered a set.

Hi,

no, it's not the same engine. The DT200R has a cylinder inlet and SDR has inlet in the crank case. If there is a compatibility in parts the engine is comparisable to the DT200WR than the DT200R.

The base gasket is not the same as from DT200R according the part numbers. Just the head gasket is.

Can you confirm the match of TZR125R crank seals on the SDR?
As all engines (DT200WR, SDR, TZR-DT-TDR125) are based on the Minarelli design parts like case gasket could match.

Does anybody know a source for pistons? Just have found in Japan and did not check OEM availability yet. Would need .25 OS.

Cheers,
Mike

Well I went into Yamaha yesterday and asked him to check the part numbers and if they were available. The head gasket was on the shelf as was the base gasket, it superceeded to another number 91 model DT.
The crank seals are the same number as the TZR 125 4DL as I have both and cross referenced the numbers. I also looked at the two motor and visual I can't see a difference so I think the casing gaskets will be able to be used too.

I stripped the bike down yesterday, every nut and bolt came off. The chrome in the frame could do with getting redone but this project is on a tight budget so that's not going to happen this time around.
All the parts look ok and after a bit of blasting on the alloy parts they should be sweet. The air filter fell apart as expected so I need one of them, I'm going to get the motor soda blasted and the side casings vapour blasted because they are seriously bad. The forks need a rechrome and then its just tyres and the chain and the brakes that need replacing.
I painted the engine cradle, subframe, bottom clamp and side stand.

Hi,
Very Happy
the frame is just nickelled, so if you would, you could chrome it without any contraindication Wink

The frame on mine is in a metallic finish powder coat. It's not original, but does look very close to the original nickel, and it's more forgiving of the surface imperfections that rust causes.

Progress has been very slow on the bike but yesterday I took the barrel off to have a look at the crank and there is some moisture evident there so a cmplete strip is called for. That's not a bad thing anyway as I couldn't get the motor to clean up even after trying to soda blast it. I powder coated the wheels and I think I will go and get the frame metalic coated too as suggested by alurt. Better get the wallet out Twisted Evil

Been going gang busters with the whippet these last few days and its ready for a fire up. Had a job to bleed the front brake but a mate suggested to hang the calliper upside down and then bleed it and bang sorted. I never touched the frame in the end just left it as it was and the paint job will have to wait for now, it still cleaned up ok anyway and I plan to thrash the snot out of the thing not polish it.

As soon as I get the tank cleaned and the body work back on I will put up a pic. I fired it up last night and it ran like a clock, nice and quiet in fact too quiet might need a chamber Twisted Evil
