Hi Folks, new to the forum, im restoring a 87 RG250 Gamma and im installing the new RIK rings in the replacement Mitaka pistons (came in a kit), im perplexed as the which is the top ring and which is the bottom ring.

there are 3 rings in the kit

1. a Taper/torsional ring with the taper on the inside of the ring
2. a standard square cut ring
3. an expander ring

the expander ring goes in the bottom ring slot on the piston, i know that, the groove is deeper.

the other rings have an "RN" mark on one side, I assume that goes UP ?

if thats true and the RN faces up, the one ring would have the inside taper/chamfer facing down (not up as i've seen before)

does the taper ring (with taper down) go in the top piston ring slot?
does the Standard square ring go in the bottom slot with the expander ?

thanks

after further investigation with my feeler gage and magnifier, top ring groove is NOT square cut (just the bottom groove is),... top ring groove has the taper on the top vertical surface of the piston groove.

top ring is tapered (keystone), which means the taper on the ring must go up and the "RN" stamp on the ring is facing down.

what has me perplexed is when the taper on the ring faces up to match the taper in the piston groove and seat properly -- both angles up....why would the "RN" mark on the ring be on the bottom ? seems odd to me

??????????

After consulting with experts and the supplier, its as I had them isntalled.

so those buying Mitaka/RIK kits for your gamma, not that the upper ring with the bevel - the bevel faces Up, and the "RN" stamp faces down.

Second square cut ring goes in the bottom groove with the "RN" face up.

Well, this still wasnt sitting right with me, I could not move past the fact that one ring had the RN mark facing down.

luckily I re read the manual and found a page I hadnt seen before.

Even the engine shop in the UK where i ordered the Mitaka kit from, opened a MITAKA box while i was on the phone with them and told me the ring with the taper/bevel cut went on the top with the bevel up.

WRONG WRONG WRONG

The heavily bevel cut ring goes on the bottom with the bevel down and the 'RN ' up

the square cut ring, actually isnt square it has a very very very minor taper and is a keystone, it goes on the top, RN up

Glad, I didnt button up the engine before i found that.
