Hey folks, so, here in the great white north of Canada, the motorcycle season is short, Basically May to September. In the winter months, we "Sled Heads" turn to snowmobiles for our 2 stroke fumes and hours of fun. Here we have over 40,000 km of groomed trail systems, all maintained by local clubs and you buy a season permit to ride them.

My son and I ride "Ski-Doo" brand (like Honda is a brand). weve got some 2 stroke sleds, 800cc, Rotax twins, liquid cooled and 165 BHP, absolute rockets. I also just picked up a new 4 stroke 1200cc Triple, 135hp, also a nice ride.

My Son's 18 and rides like the wind, Im pretty sedate, If I fall off, I hurt for days.

Clothing and Riding Gear is all specifically designed for the task, light weight and incredibly warm. Sleds have heated grips and throttle levers, and wind deflectors etc.

This morning we were out for 3 hours or so -24 C No worries

Technology in these machines is quite impressive, these are 2014,15 and 16 's the 2 strokes run super clean, they beat the emissions standards and actually run cleaner than some of the competitors 4 stroke sleds. Direct injection fuel and direct injection oil. Injector oil is only used to lube the top end, bottom end runs sealed bearings with isoflex grease. The strokers use very little 2 stroke oil, so little in fact that when i first got one of these new sleds it was worrisome.

Here are a few pics:

First the 2 strokes, the orange and yellow one is mine, Yellow and Black is my sons

the new 4 stroke 1200

It is a hoot.

I almost put my new 1200cc 4 stroke in the Rhubarb today (figuratively speaking). Trails are not great yet, not enough snow to get them groomed really well. I clipped a rock with my Right ski and the jolt caused me to hit the throttle lever (its a thumb lever), and shot myself across the other side of the trail narrowly missing a 8'ft boulder.

The 4 strokes are running a fly by wire throttle with 3 different sensitivity and power modes for the engine. I had it on "Sport" mode which is full power and very sensitive. Lesson learned, im running in "Standard" mode when im in the forest in future.

Had to change my undies when I got home

We think you need to put a Diff'rent Strokers sticker on these, at least the 2-strokes. To prevent them getting lost in the post, we'd better deliver them in person. And I guess we'll need to ride the sleds too just to make sure they're worthy. Now where did I put my winter gloves?... Innocent

Amazing, interesting about the emissions. I guessed that hidden obstacles beneath the snow top can be tricky and hazardous. I recall Yvonne Duhamel was a top Skidoo racer while not campaigning 70's Kawasaki factory triples. Definitely Different but a Stroker!

Typically just an issue for a week or so when the snow cover is light. once we get a few good snow falls and the groomers have been packing, your riding on hard pack and there are no obstacles.

Groomers are pulling a heavy packer behind them creates a wide smooth hardpack surface to ride on.

Ill pretend I've never heard of a fluffer.

but you can see a "Groomer" here :

http://snowgoer.com/snow-goer-blog/operating-snowmobile-trail-grooming-equipment/

pretty serious and very expensive piece of kit

165hp, its not as mental as you think, these machines are exceptionally well engineered, clutching (all CV clutches), gearing, engine management systems etc makes them very controllable, with oodles of power when you want it, and not when you dont.

2 years ago I moved up from a lower HP sled (70-80) to the 165 hp snack bracket. I was a bit concerned on how its manners would be, I didnt want to stuff it into a tree. But truthfully, its a pleasure to ride. Id not stick a newbie rider on one with 165hp, but there are lower power sleds for new-comers. My new 4 stroke 1200 actually comes with two RFID Keys. One key unleashes all 135 hp, the other is a "learning key" which limits power to 40% for new riders.

there are lots of aftermarket add ons as you'd expect, Tracks, Ski's, clutch kits, handlebar risers, shocks, turbo chargers, etc. etc.

Im a Keep it stock kinda guy, where as my son is constantly modifying his machine to be as bass ass as it can get.

165 hp in my machine feels sedate compared too 165 hp in his machine. He's got a much more aggressive track, Ski's, shocks and gearing setup to suit his riding style.

Sleds come with different length tracks too, the longer the track (or wider) and the more floatation you have and the better suited they become for off- trail riding. In areas with alot of mountains and 4- 10 ft of snow, the guys are riding machines that are soooo long, with such aggressive paddle tracks you just wouldnt/couldnt want to ride on a trail.

Anyway, ill stop there, im unloading useless info on you folks

Top-Shaggy, your spurring me on, talking about my other favourite hobby.

I used to be big into vintage & Classic snowmobiles, I had 20 of them , and decided to sell them all but 1 vintage sled and of course my new trail sleds and I started a classic bike collection last year instead.

this is the last one of my vintage sleds (you can see some of the old collection lined up along the wall....all gone now)

This is a 1974 Snowjet Thunderjet, sled runs a 440cc Yamaha Free-Air (air cooled) with 42mm Mikuni carbs and twin GYT Stinger pipes (Spannies to you UK folk), no mufflers/silencers. cylinders have 190 psi per side and it runs C12 = 120 octane race fuel (no pump gas). It was an Oval Track race sled only and not sold to consumers for trail use, its quite rare, I restored it in 2012. Chassis is all Magnesium its very very light

Snowjet were around in the 70"s and got bought out by Kawasaki. Neither Kawasaki, nor Snowjet are around anymore in the snowmachine industry.

today there are basically 4 main sled manufacturers:

Ski-Doo (Bombardier Recreational Products)
Polaris
Arctic Cat
Yamaha

Yamaha have been at the fore-front of the 4 stroke engine movement in snowmobiles in recent years (arguably the best 4 stroke sled engines on the market), but their sled designs have not kept pace (they are heavy and somewhat dated in design). To remedy that, In 2014 Yamaha formed a joint venture with Arctic Cat, Now Arctic Cat (or Arctic CRAP as I call 'em) builds their sleds and Yamaha builds the engines.

Turbos are certainly more frequently found on the 4 strokers, but they do have them on the 2 strokes as well. You see them mainly on the mountain sleds, where theyre running the powder snow and need bags of horse power to turn alot of rotating mass due to track length and paddle size. Most cof those guys are running EGT's (exhaust gas teperature sensors) to keep an eye out for a pending melt down.

We go to the Radar runs, these are a 1000 ft drag strip on ice (lakes) , one sled at a time and you see who can run the fasted trap speed in their class.

Some pretty cool modified sleds come out to those events, not stuff you'd want to run on a trail ride.

Anyone can do it, its a "run whatcha brung" deal. We go to conventional drag races too, 2 sleds side by side, with drag strip tree lights. Trail ride all the way there, race, and trail ride back.

Different classes of racing, bounded by cc's and whether or not your sled has ice studs in the track, and age of sled.
