Back in April 2007, I spotted an SDR200 for sale on Ebay. I thought it'd make a cool bike for Mrs.StrokerBoy, being even smaller and lighter than her 250 Hornet, and would give her something unusual to bring to shows and talk to people about.

As usual, I sent the link to Blue Smoker, telling him why I was interested and asking what he thought. He didn't reply, and when I checked the auction later the same day, it said "item is no longer available for sale". Ah well, that's Ebay for you. Rolling Eyes

That night he phoned to say he'd be coming up our way at the weekend to pick up yet another bike he'd bought, and was hoping we could meet up for lunch.

You've all worked this out already haven't you ?

Yes, he'd snapped up the SDR from under my nose, the bastard. Black Eye We did go and meet him when he collected it from Northallerton and we bloody well made him pay for lunch too. Laughing

He displayed the bike at the Bristol Show in Feb 2008 and we nicked it off the stand briefly on Saturday night and rode it round the showground. I remember it being very wheelie-prone, and that the gearchange was upside-down for some reason.

Since then, it's basically just been stored, spending a few months with his mate Paul who took a shine to it at Bristol. We've continued to make him feel guilty about it ever since, although Sara has since bought the NSR and TDR gags so has plenty of opportunity to join in at events.

At the Uttoxeter Show last week, the SDR turned up in Darin's van. He explained that he was struggling for space at home and that the SDR was ours if we wanted it, for the same price he'd paid. We've got less spare space than he has, but with a big birthday coming up for Mrs.S, I decided to treat her. It's not a surprise present by the way, she had a brief squirt round the showground on it before it was put in our van.

So what have we bought ? Well, the SDR is a Japan-only lightweight cafe-racer with the same 198cc liquid-cooled 2-stroke YPVS single as the DT200R, which was based on the TZR/DT125R motor. The frame isn't shared with anything else though, being a chromed trellis spaceframe job with matching swingarm. The whole bike is very minimalist, with some nice detail touches.

This one was brought in from Japan by now-defunct grey-import specialist Bike Direct in Bristol, and was sold to Hugo Wilson in Nov 99 for £764. Now editor of Classic Bike magazine, he was doing the same job for BIKE back then, and once registered on a D-plate, the bike appeared in the March 2000 issue in an article about winter commuting (the bike came with a copy of the mag). Journo Luke Brackenbury championed the SDR against CBR and XR 600 Honda's and seemed to like it. It was sold in June 2002 to the bloke that Darin bought it from.

Looking through the paperwork revealed another point of interest. There was a letter sent to Darin in July 2008 asking him to explain a discrepancy identified during an MOT. It turns out that the numberplate on the bike does not match the logbook - one letter is different ! Easily explained I suppose, though a bit dodgy and very strange that no-one else seems to have identified or rectified the problem. Confused

We'll sort it though, 'cos we want to MOT & tax it and take it for a proper test ride. It's still got 30-month-old petrol in it !

But shouldn't SDR's have clip-ons as standard ? Yes, this one has a different top yoke fitted with some one-piece flat bars. The riding position is good but the gold bars are a bit bling. The yoke change means that an alloy bracket is needed to mount the clock/lights, and also explains why the steering lock doesn't work. There's an aftermarket braided front brake hose but it needs to be an inch or two longer really.

The indicators are small aftermarket ones but they suit the style of the bike. The handful of red anodised bolts don't though and they'll be coming off. And why is the gearlever rubber tip also red ? There are no mirrors but it would suit one of those little round bar-end ones I reckon. There's the odd missing bolt/clip which needs sorting.

There is an Optimate lead fitted, which I discovered when I finally found out how to pop the seat - there's a cable release but the lever end is missing. All electrics seem OK I think. But orange for neutral and green for turn idiot-lights ? Checking a photo of another SDR shows that the coloured lenses (not the wires) have been mixed up. Rolling Eyes

Despite the ancient fuel, it starts easily and ticks over nicely. Sounds like my old DT125R. Very Happy

The paint is non-standard - there's a gold base coat which is showing through on the tailpiece, and the fork brace has been painted in too. There's a ding in the silencer and the front brake lever is bent. And obviously we need to get a new numberplate made up. Looking forward to putting it back on the road though ! Very Happy

Very nice Tim, always fancied one of these but never really see them come up.
Will this be making an appearance at Lotherton Hall?

Read carefully:

Maybe we should ask for a group-buy Laughing

There's a stunning one for sale on this very forum James... Wink

Got a million things on at the moment so don't know if I'll be at Lotherton Hall (July 25th), the 2-stroke meet at Squires the day before, both or none. Be nice to take the SDR if I do go, but it'll need MOT/TAX first and there may not be time to sort it.

Hey, nice bike Mister - and Mrs - StrokerBoy! Laughing We all knew I was only the temporary custodian, but it's good to see it finally get to its rightful home where it will get used (once in a while) rather than stored! Rolling Eyes Cool

Thanks to Nick69 for pointing out that the 2-stroke meet at Squires is not 24th July as I suggested, but later on the 4th Sept. Sorry for confusing anyone. Embarassed

2 minutes with a 13mm spanner has put the gear-change back the right way round again, and the battery has been topped up and charged now. All electrics tested OK - the YPVS talks to you when you switch it on and all switches/lights work fine.

A new numberplate - with the correct registration - has been fitted, and I've swapped over the neutral/turn light lenses too. And pumped up the slightly-flat tyres. So nothing to stop us taking it for an MOT now then. Very Happy

Blimey ! That goes well dunnit ?! Shocked Lots of torque, nice kick up the arse halfway up the revs, and still pulling very well when I bottled it at 120kph. Well, it's a solid 30 limit between me and the MOT station. Laughing

It passed no probs. The bike shop guys had never seen one before so I let 'em all have a quick squirt on it. 3 more SDR fans there ! Need to tax it now then take it for a proper run.

Oh, and I went back an hour later on the TDR80 and that passed too. Another oddball that was new to them. Cool

Well, seeing as this place has turned into the SDR200 Owners Club now, I might as well update this thread. Wink

I've swapped the dodgy flat bars and random yokes for the proper items, and fitted new forks too (not brand-new, just some better ones). More hassle than it should have been to be honest, but it looks and rides better now and the steering lock works too now that the crappy ally mounting bracket has gone. I've got a new rear subframe to go on, with a seat lock - there's nothing actually holding the seat on at the moment. Rolling Eyes

The whole bike needs tidying up to be honest, but a new rear shock is probably top of the list. Anyone know of a compatible part from another model ?

I got a 'spare' shock off fleabay a little while ago, also there was a gut selling lods of spare, (a bit overpriced) but had loads of stuff, might be worth giving him a pm?
I think he advertised on here (Lutonish ares?) as well as fleabay, but the shock I bought didn't come from him, so originals are still out there, occasionally, looks about the size of a RD125LC shock.
