Hi guys,(& gals, if any). Wullie from Fife in ( currantly ) sunny Scotland.
Joined forum last week as I'd like some info as to the best places to purchase
TZR 3MAs & 3XVs. Nearest importer / dealer to me appears to be "Fastline"
in Preston. Only other Grey Import dealer I know of is "Bat M/cycles in London ! I know they wont be cheap , was on Fastlines website last week ,
£3,095 for a '92 3XV. Would only shell out that amount of dosh if it looks
very tidy & well maintaned for it's age. Any thoughts / input gratefully
received. Hoping to be in a position to get something next spring 2009.

Thanks to Classicjap & Crofty for some info on where to source bikes.
Does anybody else have any info or suggestions ?
Been browsing through TZR Forum last couple of nights , found lots of info
on running , tuning & trouble-shooting / maintenance on 3MAs . Looks like
3MAs can be frustrating & hard work , but well worth the effort. Like the
idea of finding one that still needs some deristricting. My last stroker was a
brand new, ( July '87 2MA TZR ) , & did majority of blue-printing / gasflowing
on it myself & would like to pick up where I left off in 1989. Not afraid of having to do major engine work / maintenance,as I work on aircraft , so I'm
used to dismantaling for access !!! Still to do some research on 3XVs & how
you make them push out 50 plus H.P. I bet its not easy / cheap power gains,
or is it ?

Hi Wullie, and welcome!
As you seem to know pretty much what you want, all you have to do is hang around on this site until one of more of the tempremental two-stroke time bombs goes bang.
The despairing owner will half heartedly try to buy the bits to fix it, and eventually sell the whole sorry mess on to the next eager-beaver to repeat the process. If you're really lucky you'll find one that's just been fixed, and is being sold pronto before it goes bang again.
I'm at the buying-bits-to-fix stage at present, I now have enough parts to make three whole non-running engines, but not quite enough to make one that does run. It's top fun, and the spanners can be just as much fun as riding the things.

Hi, I was up at Fastline the other week, looked at all the bikes and most had some sort of paintwork done, (some good some not so) saw the 3XV and it didn't impress me too much, neither did the 3MA but they were willing to knock £500 off the price of that one without any haggling (was the black one on their site if not sold now) You really have to go and look if your serious, been looking for an SP myself but resigned to the fact that I'm probably never going to find one. Ebay will have one along at some point, and they usually go for around £1500 and above if its a runner. |

Apoligies for not responding sooner, work getting in the way of life !!
Took a trip in to FASTLINE the last weekend of May before treating (?) my
kids to a couple of days in Blackpool , saw the black 3MA & sole 3XV.
The 3XV was labeled as an SP, but is in '95 SPR colours , ( which I like ).
managed to read frame No. which was 3XV9, a '93 RS according to PURE-2-STROKE-SPIRIT web site. RS has fully adjustable suspension & dry clutch of SP, rest of motor stock R. Had a real close look at it, very clean & tidy, no scuffs , blemishes or corrosion anywhere, & has a full set of braided
steel brake hoses fitted . For sale at £ 3999.00 , offered to me for £ 3800.00, only managed to haggle down to £ 3700.00. So, now I will soon be the new owner of this specimin of YAMAHAs finest . ( Just as soon as they sort out the carburation , crap from fuel tank mucking things up, surprise , surprise ). Feel free to tell me what a muppet I am for "blowing" £ 3700.00 on a fifteen year old bike !!! What price dreams ? P.S. Well done Wullie, and welcome to the RS Owners Club.
Are you going to ride it from Fastline to the frozen North or can they deliver it?
I've downloaded workshop manuals, brochures and parts books from the 'net, if you PM me your address I'll burn you a CD and stick it in the post. The workshop manuals are in Japanese, but the service data numbers, clearances, torques and stuff are all in real numbers, and the diagrams are useful. Parts books are useful too.
I look forward to seeing pictures when you can.

Hi Arlurt & thanks for the response.
Fastline sorted carbs & delivered bike to my house on Friday 20th of June at
7:45 a.m. !!! Had a quick 15 min. ride before going to work, felt good !
On Friday night , did 70 klics on the twistier roads in my area , WOW, WHAT
A FANTASTIC NOISE going up through the 'box in the power band, I'M HOOKED !!! Feels way under geared, indicating 120 Ks at 7500 on a whiff of
throttle , & I was continually looking for 7th gear !! Havn't had a chance to
check final gearing yet, I've a feeling it will be stock though. Thanks for offer
of disc but should be able to sort that out myself. Was hoping to go for a blast
today, ( 22nd ) but it's rained most of the day ! Have read your saga on this
site, hope you get time to sort your engine out soon. Will try to get photos
posted on the site. ( Will need the help of my son for that ). I also plan to have a good look around bike to see if it still has speedo limiter unmodded &
if it's the stock C.D.I for a 93 RS ( -60 ). Wife will kill me if she catches me
ripping it apart after 5 minutes of ownership !! Best wishes, Wullie .

I'm pleased to hear it's arrived safely and that all's well.
I did you a CD on Friday, ready to go if you want it. I can post it to your work if you're unhappy about giving your address to me? The CD has pdf versions of all of the Brochures, 3XV-1 to 3XV-C, Parts Books to cover all 3XV models, Workshop Manuals for all models, 3XV-1 to 3XV-C, and Sugo Race Manuals for 3XV-7, 3XV-B and 3XV-C.
I've also added the Parts Books for the comparable TZ250 4TW and 5KE, and the TZ125 of the same era.
I hope you'll never need any of them, but it's still nice just to look at the pictures. There's some nice cut-aways in the brochures, I think I put some of them on here in Brochures section.
Let me know any way. Either PM (Private Message) me with an address, of I'll PM you with my mobile number and you can text it it me if you prefer.

Hi Wullie,
My bike has a little gearbox, about the size of a thimble, screwed into the speedo cable output on the front wheel.
This does two things for you...
First, it makes the speedo read in mph rather than kmh, so no need for one of those nasty stickers on the speedo face.
Second, it means that the Yamaha speed limiter/restrictor built in to the speedo cuts in at 120mph rather than at 120kmh, or what ever speed it is...
Neat eh? And saves buying one of those de-restricor boxes too.

Also, there are a couple of CDIs for the 3XV on eBay at the moment, I managed to get another 5hp by swapping my 3XV-40 CDI for a 3XV-00. Hi again Arlurt,
Had a good look at a couple of things on the bike last night. First off, gearing,
it's on a stock 14 tooth front sprocket , but has a 39 tooth rear !! No wonder
its doing 7,500 RPM at 120 Klicks in 6th !!! its way undergeared. Will order
15 / 38 tooth sprockets from B & C near Lincoln. Also had tailpiece fairings
off to check CDI , it's a -40, which were fitted to '92 R (3XV4) & '92 RS (3XV8), which, according to the brochures for those models, should make
45 ps @ 9,500 RPM . The 40 ps restriction came in on '93 models onward .
The '93 R/RS CDI should be a -60. You may have wasted money on your -00
CDI. Anyhoo , had another quick blast last night after increasing rear spring
pre-load one full turn of adjuster ring. Also adjusted compression & rebound
damping to soften things up a bit, there's some right bumpy roads around here ! With the low final gearing, I'm in top gear in no time. What a hoot !!!
