Took the rear fairing of my Rs125 today, unwrapped the electrical tape & found this...............
It's not really important & it works but it really niggles me but why?
I'm an easy going bloke, I would make a good peace ambassador but why the *@># do people use these electrical fittings, why?
Sorry but feel better now. |

The only reason for these is breakdowns and to get you home, it doesnt take much longer to solder and heatshrink, and its laods more satisfying _________________ Gagging for it |

Some of the genuine Kawasaki electrical connections are like those... EG indicators and brake light etc... Uh oh _________________ We are where we are... |

I've soldered and heat shrinked in the past, but I have noticed that the joint is no longer flexible and wonder about long term if the joint can become brittle over time?
I recently pulled a stereo out of my car which I had professionally installed at a reputable place... to my surprise there wasn't a single solder in the wire harness! They used a technique of wrapping the two wires together, folding and then re-wrapping them with a final bit of electrical tape. I was surprised at how solid but flexible the joint was. It was a downright decent bodge! I'm reconsidering soldering now. |

Now I have a theory about this.
As a rule, I never solder anything regardless of what certain magazines tell you, unless I have to lengthen a cable.
And even then it is better to either unwrap the loom & replace the entire length or just run another cable from point to point on the outside of the loom.
There is a good few reasons the Japanese do not solder their cables.
Obviously cost.
FLUX, it helps soldering especially on old dirty strands of cable but it is also very corrosive!!! Regardless of how well you clean the soldered joint.
But, and this is my theory, the heat from soldering affects the cable insulation. Then heat shrinking compounds the situation. And after a short time the repaired cable becomes stiff &/or brittle.
I'm not an expert on electrics but to me this more & more seems to make sense.
What do you think? |

I will choose to solder wires over any kind of crimping, its only time and cost that is against this, but i agree the best way is to completely renew the entire length of wire, iv joined many many small wires and not had an issue with soldering apart from dry joints in relays of on pcbs, ill even put some solder in a crimped connection to make sure.
I can see what your saying about degrading the insulation but iv not found much of an issue, i think its more important to have a well sealed joint to stop corrosion getting in and up the wires _________________ Gagging for it |
