looks like you got worn rings as for the piston with it been dirty looks petty worn and barrel looks glazed
could probs get away with a quick hone and new rings if the piston has nice fit and overhaul conditon is good
but that depends on how well the bore is
if marked a rebore new piston and ring is more or less a must
dont use k.h.c piston ring the wont last a tank of petrol the pistons are ok (nothing special)
and 150 mile run in not going above 6/7k rpm unless for a second
also how was the compression , starting ect..? |
Hi Jack,
I'll be going for a new piston, rings & a re-hone,
And I'll heed your comments on K.H.C pistons.
Do you know of a supplier of genuine piston/ring kits and do I need to wait until the liner is re-honed, before I order replacements, or do I just order one size up etc?
Thanks for the heads up on the break in process as well, not something that us four strokers usually need to consider after the initial 500 miles from new!
The starting has been 1st or second kick and she's pulled well (for a restricted 125).
My next purchase will be a compression tester. _________________ Kindest regards

Good that you took the Cylinder off Reggie, Id be putting a new piston and rings into it, give it a hone and see how the bore looks.
being this far, might as well put new in to it, i'd say.
nice job cleaning up the head. |
Hi Straycat,
it's amazing what you can do by blocking the area with sponge and combining a hard plastic scrapper, with plenty of WD-40, re the engine and for the barrel, I soaked in very hot water, along with some Steradent tablets (that my dad uses to clean his dentures with) and gentle scrubbing with an old tooth brush! _________________ Kindest regards

normally they ask for a piston to match up (may be different to others)
what size is the piston in it? cause anything over 1.00 is impossible to find oem but Mitaka do them and are ok (use rik piston rings) and imd pistons (shop) seem to do a decent set with rik rings (1.00)
and there is afew places doing old stock oem piston and rings
also kh125 from about 1983 later use the same piston _________________ ar125 a1 1983, ar125 b2 1988, ar125 b4 1988, ar125 b7 1991, kinroad xt50q 2011

Hi Jack,
I reckon it's the original piston & rings, she's only just reached 10,000 miles.
Where does it show on the piston that it's a different size, as I didn't notice any markings on it?
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll take that route once I know sizes etc. _________________ Kindest regards

may want to measure the bore and piston size 55.00mm is std
also just as another thing if the piston does not have an arrow the ring gaps go at the rear of the barrel _________________ ar125 a1 1983, ar125 b2 1988, ar125 b4 1988, ar125 b7 1991, kinroad xt50q 2011

Hi Jack,
that's very interesting, as the current piston did have the rings gap to the rear and a feint arrow pointing toward the front.
I'll measure it, when I get home from work tomorrow.
By the way, inside the piston it says JAPAN in large capital letters and the shape of a leaf, with the letters SK inside it.
Thanks again matey. _________________ Kindest regards

Reggie,
I hope this will not alarm you, but you may like to research other peoples' experiences with "SK" pistons before using one.
This is the same brand of piston originally fitted to the KR-1 and many of them apparently lost their ring pegs in use. I understand that the engines were rebuilt under warranty with new pistons and cylinders...and sometimes new crankshafts as well, as the cranks were damaged when the pistons failed.
I have yet to determine how widespread the problem was, and also whether the damage occurred during normal riding or during sustained high-speed use (i.e perhaps overheating). Whatever the case, Kawasaki soon changed to ART pistons for the KR-1 and KR-1S (and the ART piston was updated several times during the model's production run).
Having said that, some KR-1 owners are still using the original pistons, seemingly without trouble, suggesting that failure is less likely to occur as a result of normal riding.
Although the problem with SK pistons in the KR-1 is fairly well known, it is possible that this brand of piston was used in many other bikes without issue. Therefore, I'm not suggesting that all SK pistons are suspect...just that you may like to do some research!
Regards,
James |

Hi Guys n Gals,
the barrel, old piston & rings were dropped off with PJME of Wolverhampton this week and have a turnaround of about a week to ten days, so the wait begins!
Oh I forgot to reply to Jack, the piston was the original, so it's yet another indication the the mileage is correct. _________________ Kindest regards

Hi Jack,
when I get the piston & barrel back, I'll be rebuilding then replacing the gearbox oil ( which was in a surprisingly good condition) and I've got some of hat all singing, all dancing coolant, that can't be topped up with wage, to see how it goes.
Good luck with yours mate. _________________ Kindest regards
