polishing a turd............
the standard Bandit 650 rear caliper bracket isn't a thing of beauty, or light weight...........
so a few holes drilled in it should lighten it a tad........
and several hours of grinding / cutting / filing later......
shame it can't be seen when fitted........ |

Nice job, did you weigh it before and after? _________________ Light is right. |

I would have removed the bottom two but not the one against the calliper carriers.. Must admit though it looks pretty trick _________________ We are where we are... |

Excellent build, thats some talent there. Amazes me how folks can build from scratch and make it all work. _________________ 2014 Honda VFR800

at last ! the Bandit 650 wheel is in and the sprocket retaining nuts clear the swingarm
all thanks to a couple of guys on the Katana UK forum who suggested I use a Suzuki GS500 sprocket carrier as it has less off-set, but still uses the same cush drive arrangement. You can see the difference in the pic below - left-to-right, standard Bandit 650 cush drive, standard with 10mm removed from sprocket mounting faces and bearing housing and lastly the (dirty) standard GS500 unit.
now ready to roll to the welding shop for it's engine brackets to be fitted.............

dropped the Katana off at Mr Warrington's emporium of speed to have the motor fitted.
it's in good company, with 2 Kettles (gold one is a"K", rare Jewel Grey one is an "M") and a Lucky Strike VJ22 awaiting John's attention.............
and a big-bore (APE block), flat-slide equipped (though not fitted), Spondon armed Katana..........
plus the obligatory blown-up / seized / bent Yamaha
this LC has a bent frame.......
and my travelling companions, less than impressed with the stunning moorland scenery enveloped in horiziontal rain and a howling gale..............

some updates...............
well - it's been a while but, in response to a phone call from the God of Speed that is John Warrington, I found myself at his premises this morning to help finalise the engine position. John had already installed the frame in his jig and levelled it in readiness for my visit...............
so we set about getting the chain alignment right......
this off-set the motor so that the r/h exhaust port was fouled by the frame downtube. John sparked-up the grinder to make room for the header pipe.....
should fit now.........
then. in a flurry of sparks, he set about making some templates for the upper rear engine mounting plates........
sure do hope his welding is better on the finished items........
once the rear mountings are completed, it's time to fit the new frame downtubes............. |

just scored this...............
early GT750 "J" frame off ebay for £30 - plan is to cut the bottom cradle / downtubes out of this and fit them to the Katana frame to give the right clearance for the exhaust header pipes. Hopefully, we can utilise the original motor mounts too. |

spent a couple of hours at Mr Warrington's. The trusty 15" grinder made short work of the GT750 frame................
then out with the old, and in with the new...........
some heating and tweaking.........
and that fits nicely.......
the down tube requires the same attention........
and gets it..........
spot on (ish)..................
tacked in place, awaiting final welding........
t'other side next............ |

After much heating / bending / tweaking, here's the r/h frame tube tacked in place............
and the rolling chassis with motor..........
final welding and dressing of [s]wounds[/s] welds next............ |

this is the final welding of the GT750 engine cradle tubes to the original Katana frame………….
I have now decided that I don't like the look of the rear footrest brackets / silencer mounts so they are coming off next - more welding required |
