I have a Japanese yamaha GT80 1981, (fully road legal with monoshock rear suspension), that I understand to be quite rare - in fact the yamaha owners club think it might be the only one in the UK.
It's a 79cc 2 stroke with 5 gears and is pretty nippy. I am in the process of getting it back on the road after I layed it up a few years ago due to crankseals going. Engine all fixed and getting there with the rest but finding it hard to get any specific info on this bike. The engine is basically the same as the ty80 etc only 79cc but if anyone has any info it would greatly appreciated.
I am also looking for a side cover............. Left hand side if sitting on the bike. It is very specific and the older twin shock versions do not have it as the oil tank is part of the side cover.......... On line the tank is in the frame.
Basically any info or guidance / links would be appreciated
Regards

Cheers James, not tried yahoo auctions as never heard of them so cheers.
Google images has proved useful to a point but surprising how few pictures of the monoshock version are there.

I've had a lot of hard-to-find parts from Yahoo Auctions Japan over the years. A lot of sellers won't deal with anyone outside Japan, but there are several 'middleman' agents who'll buy items on your behalf and handle the shipping etc. I've used FromJapan myself. Start by browsing the items yourself to get a feel for what's available. |

Strokerboy...... I have now seen things I want to buy off of yahoo auctions, could you explain the middleman part and suggest any you may trust?

As I said, the only one I've used is FromJapan. I started back in 2006 and haven't used it in a few years so it may have changed. Google Translate didn't exist back then, I'm sure it's all got a lot easier now.
You create an account with them, register a credit card or other payment method, and then use their website to place bids on the items you want, having authorised a deposit to cover your likely costs. Their software automatically places the bid on your behalf, so if you then check the item in Yahoo Auctions Japan, it'll show that 'FromJapan' currently has the highest bid. There are Buy It Now items as well as conventional auctions. You can monitor the state of all your bids via the FJ site.
Once the item you're bidding on has completed, the seller (assuming you won !) will package it up and send it to the FJ office, charging them the sale price plus normal domestic post/packing. These costs will be passed on to you of course. FJ will then repackage/relabel it and send it on to you. You'll get a choice of shipping methods. Obviously you pay this second international shipping cost too. You also have to pay an FJ handling fee and currency-conversion charge. All of these will be charged to your account.
Unless you're very lucky, you'll also have to pay an additional customs/import charge when your package arrives in the UK, plus another fee for ParcelForce to administer it.
Depending on what you win and when, they will often package stuff together and ship it all at once, which can save you a lot. You can't easily predict total costs - I've had big boxes of multiple parts that I considered an absolute bargain, but I also ended up paying a total of £26 for a single magazine that I actually won at the £2 start price.
There are certain items that are ridiculously expensive to ship, or that they won't even ship at all. Petrol tanks can be tricky, or anything potentially containing liquids like forks. They won't stop you bidding on them though, so take care. Think about weight with regard to shipping.
I recommend dipping your toe in the water with a few small/cheap items that all finish around the same date, and see how you feel afterwards. Good luck, and let us know how you get on.
