Hi all
i May have got a local firm to make new shrouds for my end cans in stainless steel but they also could do them in aluminium.
I will keep you informed and post some pics when i have the pipes finished. _________________ Riding a two stroke is sometimes like buying a one way ticket!!!!! |

Nice one
Are they for the rivet type or the welded on ones? |

hi
i am getting the shrouds made so i can rivet on regardless of the original fixings. This enables quick replacement if damaged in the future. _________________ Riding a two stroke is sometimes like buying a one way ticket!!!!! |

Hi Charlie,
Can you let me know how you got on with the end can shrouds and if possible let me have the companies details? I've just cut off the shrouds from my end cans today, which are the welded on type. I'm getting them blasted then either powder coated or I'll paint them with PJ1 VHT paint, then stick the shrouds back on using blobs of JB weld - has anyone else used this stuff before?

Hi Bobby, the guy that did mine, did pretty much what you're doing, but just tig'd the covers back on, then touched up the bare metal/welds with more PJ1. Its holding up just fine. My bike came with the early, short cans, prob like yours, as I think most Jap Market bikes had the short cans. My old D Reg had the rivets, but I'm sure they were welded too, Erik, can you confirm that? _________________ Breathing new life into an old Gamma!

I have a Japanes import RG MK3 and its the shorter version.
And with the sleeve welded on.
Also have a European RG and thats with the longer endcan with rivets.
The RG MK3 partsbook lists 2 sort of endcans
14303/14304-40A10 long ones with rivets
14330/14350-40A02 short ones welded
Hope this helps.....

Hi Erik, are the longer, rivetted covers welded in addition to the rivets? _________________ Breathing new life into an old Gamma!

Gary
I've got a spare rivetted can in the garage and it's not welded at all.
It's a lot longer than the rivetted type though.

Gary,
Rob is right.
The rivet longer ones are not welded
Also the sleeves on the MK1/MK2 endcans have rivets but no welds

Hi All
I have had 4 pairs of end-can shrouds made all out of stainless steel, i have only just got my end cans back from powdercoating so will in the next couple of days fit the shrouds and then take some pics.
I got these made by a friend down the road from were i live as a barrow job but can make enquiries about how much they would cost as a proper job .
I am still in 2 minds as to how i attach the shrouds , i think rivetting will be best for me but still thinking spot weld maybe?
I think i will end up rivetting the first set and see how it goes once drilled for rivetts theres no going back.
Please have a look in the wanted section in neer of some small but necessary parts for rebuild _________________ Riding a two stroke is sometimes like buying a one way ticket!!!!! |

hi
Eventually got round to fitting end can shrouds and they look great , just a pity the end can itself was slightly scuffed near the end but not that noticeable just being picky.
Resto is coming on slowly back end in , just spraying fork clamps and stripping forks ready to send to philpots for re-chroming.
Adding a couple of pics of resto and of end cans.

Perfect
Did you drill the 12 holes yourself ?
The rivets must be a tight fit
If not the oily exhaust sticky stuff will find its way around the rivets.
They look so much better than the ones i have on mine......

hi Erik
i did drill the holes myself with 3.5 mm drill the rivets needed quite alot of pressure to push in so hope they will be tight enough .
I have a pair of cans that already have rivetted shrouds so may have to remove old shrouds weld up holes and then drill as i have the ones in the pics.
Do you think 12 rivets is the right amount , i thought of trying less but thought the gap was too big and might cause them to vibrate.
These restored pair will go on my Walter Wolf when i get the front pipes back from painting , the powdercoating company is spraying them with bbq paint and baking them in the oven. I have had one set done already and seem to resist the heat ok and look quite good as it is semi-gloss finish , will post pics when i get them back. _________________ Riding a two stroke is sometimes like buying a one way ticket!!!!! |

Erik you need to get some pics on of your bikes especially the early WW have never seen one of those.
I prefer to ride bikes than restore but this rg is my last resto because its so bloody expensive , this will work out more expensive than my vfr 750 , i just hope its worth it , i can see me not finishing till early to mid next year.
Still got all the engine to do !! _________________ Riding a two stroke is sometimes like buying a one way ticket!!!!! |
