Posted: Thu Dec 16, 2010 5:13 am Post subject: my RETRO resto RD 80 LC project bike...a diffrent stroker . |
|
|
ok il post pics time related... but my last rd 80 lc is a mishmash of left over parts and is a german based frame and mismatched engine...sick of building ornaments so building a road hack...this is a proper retro including baja grips!!!!
cut down muddy mini indicators and flat bars....its a dark metalllic blue frame i have created the colour btw so is a one off!!!!
it is same as the one i had in 125 lc form so i am gonna use this bike and have a bit of fun on it...may even show it as well but 100% going on the road.....
anyone with a fairing please let me know as i am despo for one....
hey ho i guess no one will follow my projects will you...
still i am after some metzeler stickers as well.
ok her is the full frame on my black and decker...all my 80's started on this...
now colour is not as in pics...it looks lighter but ive taken some with no flash but outside the frame is the nuts!!!!
its candy blue over light graphite instead of silver as normal candy blue is...the coaters wer not sure about my choice but they did it and amazed themselves how good it looks!!!
swinger with and without flash
rest of the coted parts.....and note red spring for shocker....
so assembly begun...grommets were 1st then the 1st of the metal took its places....
painted shocker gold and fit spring....
gone for original ball races as the tapers make the yoke not fit properly with the head light brackets...so be warned if your doing one of these....
plastic inner guard fitted and nice shiny polished nuts....
new brake switch....
battery box reg were fitted and the 6 volt reg...was and may still conveert this bike to 12v but sorting the loom for that....so it may change yet.... ;D
footpeg hangers blue and just as we all did in the 80's....this is exactly as i had mine so i am doing a retro resto....
bottom yoke all greased and ready to go and fitted in...note blue to match frame...l
coil....
airbox fitted but has a few marks but my last one so aint too fussed about it being mint...
if i wanted mint i have a full nos complete airbox in the loft...but thats for my nos bike!!!
swinger greased and fitted into the frame....
brake lever etc fitted and hanger bolted onto the frame...polished the allen bolts....
and the left one....
oil tank fitted cleaned and primed with oil.....
radiator and coolant bottle....
battery loom relay all connected etc etc and all repairs to the loom done and taped up....
bolted up the shocker and swinger..... all greased and new split pins then waxoyled over the top....
top yoke is off a german bike and ignition is as well so to use the parts up ive used these 1st....loads of differnces between the german and uk bikes ...and i mean loads!!!
i did have a picture of it all together but that's on my phone...so i will update later....
bike is having blue seat and a different set of blue wheels traffic blue to match the seat...looked at white wheels but on the front it makes it "to " white with white muddy...so am doing this bike exactly as i had mine....
all the blue coating cost me £50!!!
coater owed me a favour as i sorted his sky dish out so favour for a favour....
coating had been done 3 times...
graphite
blue
then laquer....bargain!!!!
ok today's little efforts......
as i said i wanted an cut down muddy on my retro resto....
so.....
one muddy....
mask up desired line....
take one of these
and do this!!!!!!!
sand down the edges best i can and polish up the raggy bits.....
fit mount bracket higher up....
nice mount ready for the smaller plate.....
a bit smaller and neater....
now i feel really seventeen now by what i've just done.... pmsl!!!!!!!
fitted the tail section to see how it all looks....
blue wheel ready to fit....
assembled the drum and shoe's etc etc....
bar and nuts and then fitted to swinger....
carrier all built up.....
zinc nuts and bolts ready.....
wheel fitted and bolted up....
whatcha recon????just exactly as mine was....
this was a running engine out of this bike and was sound so aint split it or vapoured it as its a road bike so left it be...if it aint broken why fix it and it has all new crank in etc so leaving it .....
connected all up and turned her over....and a nice spark!!!!!
built up the clock's with some nos bits and 125lc clocks as it will be more accurate as this will have a bore kit on it....
and fitted high beam rev counter as i prefer the idiot light on my clocks....
so all in all a fun day.....i really loved the rear muddy part the best!!!!!!
barrel gone in for rebore/hone and rest of the blue frame parts have gone in for coating.....
forgot the grab handle, gear lever, and decided headlight brackets needed doing same blue as the black ones looked crap....
update when i can lads...done enough in 48 hours...lol

That's looking good Gary,
Full marks for cutting down the muddy, very very brave Its almost a crime nowadays
Some people can't get their heads round the fact its your bike & you can do what you want with it.
Love the blue frame by the way. |

the last of the forgotten candy blue bits arrived today......
grab handle was fitted to the frame ......
clocks were mounted and all wired up spot on....
gear lever assy built up and fitted to the frame...note polished bolt lol...
dummy old forks placed for ease to build the front end up....
these will be simply removed when i get my others back....
horn mount and replacement horn!!!
bigbore piston on the left....standard on the right.....so a bit larger then.....
the fitted bore kit copper gasket with 3bond on both sides and left to cure for rest of build before water is added....head was skimmed so no lip on it for a tight squish....but was too tight...so added 2 base gaskets..... _________________ keep em smoking them out...lol

Sorry Gary, been away and once back at work I couldn't see your pics.
Always like to see what you're up to, nice contrast to the people whose projects drag on for years with nothing to show for it (ahem ) !
Keep the updates coming. |

I put red Baja foam grips on my 350LC back in the day. Wasn't too long before they were a grubby black... |

ok did a bit today on my bike ...1st this year so here we go....
fitted my end can to my micron and put a decal over the sterling bit...and covers it spot on!!!
fitted some of these baja's...ooohhh feel so nostalgic now....lol
and the right one.....
ok 2 seat options.....i like both tbh and so i ask all of you to add opinions and will go with the majority tbh...so over to you all.i must admit i had the blue seat a long time and the white and blue made recently and need cleaning now tbh but really nice.
so c'mon lads cast an opinion as im torn between the two.
