I was asked the question - what's the difference between the early AR125 (82-84) and later (post 85 model) pistons ?
Well I've had my measuring stick (vernier) out looking at two pistons from each period and the answer is.......
De de dum . . . Pretty boring really
Hardly anything other than the Kawasaki part numbers and the strengthening ridges cast under the head of the piston:
The piston on the left is a A model (not restricted) piston from 83/84 model whilst the one on the right is a A model piston from circa 1988
Single reinforcing ridge 83/84 piston
Three reinforcing ridges 88 piston
I also checked a couple of cheaper pattern pistons advertised for all models (all years 82-91) and these had the single reinforcing ridge.
Conclusions - not a lot of difference.
Pistons that are oversized (+1mm/+2mm etc) are the same as the standard pistons from each period group.
If choosing a piston I would opt for the later A model genuine KHI piston

is the original size of a piston 55mm? or 55.5? Also do you know the stroke/travel of the piston?
Also the barrel came! Woo.! _________________ Current bikes

According to my book on all things Green,
The AR125 through its model range had a bore of 55mm & a stroke of 51.8mm.
Hope this helps TNG? |

Spot on Mr Howie
The rod has differing part numbers for the very early model (83/84) than the later AR's yet the stroke is the same. Like the pistons I will have to compare them when I get the chance (one of these dark cold evenings) and play the 'spot the difference again... As with the pistons the later rod is probably the better one to use.
Hope you can make some use of the Barrel TNG, I haven't checked it for size but if i had used it i would probably have rebored it anyway
Let us all know how you get on fella _________________ We are where we are... |

It was already re bored once as it was 55.5mm before i cleaned it up to 56mm, got it all back on and it has good compression when turning over with the kick, but it wont start yet since i have no ignition and i need to flush out the water radiator, connect the fuel and other little bit, currently painting the manifold too _________________ Current bikes
