Hi, thought i'd have a go at doing this up, it isn't too bad, but the shocks gone, and the frames rusty around the welds etc etc, not going to be a minter, as I'm not touching the engine, was told it had rebore/pistons etc when I bought it........
Which brings me to the next queston, was mentioned by bryan (off the RD/LC forum, that it used to belong to Fred, so if you're here, got any clues please??
All in bits now, so no going back  |

Not sure about the ferrari influence! I'm sure it will be great when finished. I bought one last year from Tom Mac which is good mechanically but the bodywork is now off to the paintshop. Looking forward to Spring, assuming I recover from imminent heart surgery - but if I don't there will be a nicely sorted R1-Z for sale.........  |

If i'm the Fred your asking about I'm more than happy to help with your R1-Z 
Sorry to say its not one of mine and funny its never been in my garden 
Your resto plans sound very much like I did on John Salmons '' Black Beauty '' ?
Basically stripped it back to bare frame ....
Got frame / Swingarm / Fork Clamps powdercoated ......
All nuts & bolts re coated .....
Bearings replaced were required ....
All lumped together ....

Nice pipes - Ox racing? If you know of anything similar hanging around in someones shed please let me know!
Fondseca advertised pipes for R1-Z a while ago & when i contacted them they went quiet - I think they had made an error in thinking that TZR pipes would be a straight swap. They don't do they? |

| Thanks Fred, seen most of your resto's and lots of the youtube stuff too. Any idea if the decals are still available off the shelf, really want to try and keep the frame and swingarm ones, but looks unlikely if i choose the powdercoat route. Had thought about masking off and spraying 'around' them instead.(but would need to be rattle cans) |

Hi R1Zman
The Pipes now fitted to John's bike are Jap market SPEX Racing underslung type .... I have the cross over version fitted to the '' Yella Fella '' .....
When I first got in touch with John to help sort the R1-Z he had been given a very old set of TZR Nikon pipes that we managed to fit ..... Only part that required sorting was the mounting points at the rear ..... They did'nt line up with the standard R1-Z points but were very near to the footrests .... Basically a set of TZR footrest mounting rubbers were pressed in and short adapter brackets made

You are correct SP_BOTT basically powder coating you loose the Frame & Swing are decals .....
I'm sure the bodywork graphics are listed in the parts book but not looked for the Frame & Swingarm ....
I have tried to remove them off all 3 frames I've sorted but they are well stuck 
There must be someone out there who can make from a good quality photo ? Perhaps '' Simon 5 '' ?

Quick update...
It's definately a project now, looks like the crank has been sitting in water for years (although I have had it running on and off the past couple of years, but it's been stuck in a wooden shed all it's life since)
Can only assume it's been put back together wrongly or the head/base gaskets have failed? Got a few pics, but it's not nice the usual rusty sludge, one big end nearly seized too. |

Thanks, not too important as it's not my only bike.
Just uploaded a few pics for all to see
both heads look similar, so assume this was reason for the rebuild
Head gasket full of gunge at waterways, is this a non genuine gasket?

Too true
I got the crank out yesterday, and all the mains are nearly seized, and obviously very rusty, same appears for the big ends on RH side.
Anyone got any ideas on what to do next, new/SH crank, if so where from?
Or shall I just send this one to be repaired????
Will a 350 YPVS one fit and work?? |
