So, the KMX passed it's MOT today. The ride there in torrential rain was not that much fun compounded by the rear bulb blowing on the way, typical!
A quick run down on the bike: it's done 10000 miles in it's 25 years on the road. The first owner had it for ten years and only did about 5k, a father and then his son then owned it for the last fifteen years or so.
Good points:-
It's pretty much original, still has the handbook and oem toolkit.
It had a top end rebuild 1000 miles ago
It's got the full power 4fl46 needle, yay!
Bad points:-
The brakes and suspension need a refresh.
The front trail wing is old, hard and scary in the rain.
The frame is a bit rusty in places and some of the plastics are a little tired.
It seems to hang around 3000 rpm rather than return to idle when revved when warm. The inlet rubber is really badly perished so I'm hoping that is the root of the cause, and not a crankcase seal.
The exhaust is also pretty rusty, hope it's not completely rotten.
I've stuck a DEP tailpipe on to make it sound a bit more rorty, which sounds very nice!

Great stuff Jim, pleased its got the best needle option
I had to change my inlet rubber between the carb and reed block due to the same reason.. It looked perished but I couldn't see any cracks right thought until I took it off.
That said may be worth trying a few quick things first... The VM26 slide can stick a little so turning down the tick over ever so slightly when its hanging at 3000 can sometimes sort it out without making it tick over too low when cold. (The AR125s do this too)
Worth oiling the throttle cable and making sure its not trapping. Also spraying some WD on the manifold rubber again when its hanging to see if it finds any gaps?
Worth checking the choke is not loose where it screws into the carb etc
You probably know all this, just a thought

That's a great tip about the idle adjustment, thanks! I fitted a new inlet rubber tonight and I'm also going to give the cables a lube tomorrow, hopefully it will sort it out.
It's running a (standard) 112.5 main jet, do you think that will be ok with the DEP tailpipe? Or should I go up to a 115? |

I would leave the main jet as it is an see how its running, checking the plug after a good blast out. I also have DEP can and resonator spacers .. The only thing my KMX200 wanted was the clip lowering (raising the needle) and it seems spot on _________________ We are where we are... |

I was looking at the KIPS spacers, do they make much of a difference?
And excuse me for sounding ignorant, do you need a spacer on both sides, or just on the left hand side? |
