Picked up another 2 stroke a few days before Christmas. This time its German and as four wheel. I got me a Trabant.
Twin cylinder, air cooled, 600cc, 26hp, 2 stroke. Drove it 120 miles home. That was an adventure. Its a crazy thing really. Should be good for a laugh |

This was taken by the previous owner while on the Screwball rally. He did over 2000 miles in 5 days to Lake Como and back. There is plenty of work on it to keep me busy.

What's the big black tank in the engine bay? Is it the oil tank? |

The black tank is the fuel tank for the premixed petrol. The rally is one of these crazy car type charity runs. I'm surprised it made it. I'm having to do immediate work to make it reliable. It was an adventurous 120 mile drive home in the dark on failing 6 volt electrics. |

I have always fancied a Trabant but never actually driven one, accepting the power output what is comfortable cruising? I missed one locally recently. _________________ If it don't ring-a-ding-ding it ain't worth a thing |

I done 120 miles at 50mph. It was happy at that. The book top speed is only 62 mph. I brought because i always like things that are a little different. And being 2 stroke also made the choice easy. |

Same reason for me, particularly Eastern European engineering. _________________ If it don't ring-a-ding-ding it ain't worth a thing |

That looks brilliant Andy - will you being doing any "performance modifications"? What are the brakes like? How does it handle?

James |

I like to do a little porting on my 2 strokes but i will try to resist on this, until the need to pull the cylinders.
Most would think the brakes are crap as most are used to servo brakes. They are quite good, but you just need to press hard. If you jump out of this and straight in to a modern car, the first time you brake, you tend to brake very hard.
It handles very well on its front and rear transverse leaf spring.
Andy. |
