|
|
Dear All,
I recently stumbled across a Mk3 that is literary in a box... Completely stripped down as the previous owner managed to blow-up one of the pistons into 1mil pieces and in the process scratched-up the cylinder and stuff the crank big end...NASTY !!!
I started cleaning things up and investigating what is required to get the 'ol girl running again...
I noticed some cracking in the frame, situated on the cast members underneath the swing arm pivot. Cracks are less than 1mm wide, but span most of the cast members.
The frame appears to be straight but the cracking is worrying.
I'm thinking about having it welded and then coated...
Any-one had some experience on this?
Any info re materials, weld technique used, coatings etc would be useful...
Regards

Had the same problem on 3 RG 250 frames.
Got the one with the smallest crack welded by a man who knows what he is doing NICO BAKKER in The Netherlands.
Seems to be a weak spot on the 250's.
All the cracks are in the cast alu section were the swingarm pivot goes .

Yes, been there and done that! Its more common than people know of, I imagine, get em welded. The cracks on mine were only evident on the inside of the castings. One guy had a go at welding them and struggled, he reckoned there were some odd things in the alloy, but the 2nd guy I took it to, did a great job and said it was routine stuff. _________________ Breathing new life into an old Gamma!
