Diff'rent Strokers

Some of you might have seen my Yella R1-Z on display for Diffrent Strokers ?

It's about time I showed you folks my latest project Wink

Basically I've been itching to do something else so when I spotted another R1-Z frame for sale on Alex RD Forum I quickly snapped it up Cool

Thats was all I had '' The Frame '' .....
So I started searching for something cheep that I could use for its running gear ?

I found a cheep FZR 400 1WG 3EN1 that has a diffrent swinger to other FZR's and the front is simular to the standard R1-Z item ....
The FZR was soon stripped with me keeping the running gear and selling on the left overs to someone who wanted it for a Quad Bike ...

With much head scratching I managed to fit the rear end !

Swing arm was too wide but all it needed was the bearings pushing in 5 mm each side and the inner tube shortening ....

The shock mount took me some time to work out finally going with a mito 125 shock ! Complete with handmade '' Dog Bones '' ....

I tacked it all into place but got someone at work to do the final welding as I don't trust my '' Pidgeon Sh*t Welding '' Laughing

The front end required a stem swap as the FZR item was way too long .....

Tom Mac came to the rescue giving me a 350 Powervalve bottom yolk to use along with a set of headstock bearings Razz

Finally I've just managed to fit my spare R1-Z clock / headlight bracket ....
And this is how the project looks at the moment ....
Still lots to get on with over the winter but I'll keep you posted ..

shame you didn't fit the Mito swingarm + forks too IMHO

what motor are you fitting - standard Yam or something diff'rent?

can I have the Yella one when you've finished this? Very Happy

Progress has been a little slow over the past few weeks ( Its too cold ) Confused

Sorted out a new rear calliper set up ... KR1S underslung jobbie just have to get ancor point welded for torsion bar Rolling Eyes

Also offered 350 YPVS motor up to see whats involved if i fancy a motor swap sometime in the future once the chassis been mot'd and got a reg plate Wink

Works been slow on the project mainly because i'd run out of cash Rolling Eyes

Over the last few weeks I've managed to shift some stuff out of the workshop and stick it on ebay but how people make a living out of it full time god only knows Confused

Yesterday I finally collected enough £££££ to get its tyres fitted and rolled it out into the sunshine .....

Still lots to do but its now ready for my other R1-Z or a palls R1-Z to temp donate its bodywork ... motor ... electrics etc so I can get the bike tested and plated for the second stage of the build Wink

R1-Z Mk2 passed its MOT on Saturday morning Very Happy

Happy New Year 2012 Wink

Well i thought it was time to update whats been going on with my Yamaha R1-Z MK2 Project ?

Basically the project slowed to a stop while I restored John's standard R1-Z after using its motor / electrics / bodywork to get my MK2 Project Mot'd !
This allowing me to get it registered for road use after the bike had been stripped to just the frame on import 17 odd years ago Shocked

After all the work involved with fitting the FZR 400 3EN1 swingarm it never realy looked right when the bodywork was fitted ?
The rear wheel looked to far in ?

So out came the FZR swingarm and in went a newly purchased TZR 250 3MA swingarm and Yamaha R6 shock after the Mito 125 shock was too soft Shocked

After the swingarm its time to try and get my 31K Powervalve 350 fitted !
1st impressions show that the rear motor hanging point needs removing and turning to lift the motor and pull back towards the swingarm as the chain catches onto the swingarm pivot point ?

Here's some pics and hopefully more to follow as time is split between bike play and DIY Hell refitting the bathroom ....
